Artist's Statement:
I make seemingly simple and accessible
pieces in order to open up discussion on
otherwise complex issues. My work is concerned with the destruction of
the natural
world by ever-encroaching technologies and industry. Through my work, I
am
emphasizing the preciousness of life in the face of continuous examples of
the cheapness
of life, and addressing the misogyny of the world we live in.
My works on paper rely on two-dimensional
design using organic and/or
geometric form and familiar symbols to anchor my abstractions to a
concrete reading. In
the watercolors, I am using the paint opaquely and gradating it in order
to add volume
and movement.
The sculpture, which is of carved stone,
wood or clay, is a reflection of my
participation in an ancient dialogue about the female form in art.
Through my focus on
the figure, I am reevaluating women's place in myth, history and religion.
In both the works on paper and the
sculpture, I avoid specific details in order to
give the work a more universal appeal. The accessible nature of my work
encourages the
viewer to bring their own experience to it, and interpret it for their
lives.
